What personal data we collect and why we collect it

COMMENTS

When visitors leave comments on this site, I collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help detect and eliminate spam. An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using that service. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

MEDIA

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

CONTACT FORMS

To assist with sending you requested information, we use MailerLite to collect and store your email address. MailerLite outlines its use of your personal data and anonymized data here. You may opt out of the collection of your data by unsubscribing (we will remove your data) and contacting MailerLite using the instructions on its privacy page.

COOKIES

If you leave a comment on our site, you may opt in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year. If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine whether your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser. When you log in, we also will set up several cookies to save your log-in information and your screen display choices. Log-in cookies last for two days, and screen-options cookies last a year. If you select “Remember Me,” your log-in will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the log-in cookies will be removed. If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

EMBEDDED CONTENT FROM OTHER WEBSITES

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website. These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

THIRD-PARTY LINKS

Occasionally we may include or offer third-party products or services on our website. These third-party sites have separate and independent privacy policies. We have no responsibility or liability for the content and activities of these linked sites. Nonetheless, we seek to protect the integrity of our site and welcome any feedback about these sites.

By clicking on a link to a third-party website, you may allow third-parties to collect and/or share your personal information. The privacy policies and terms and conditions on those third-party websites may differ from www.authorsuzyoakley.com’s. We encourage you to read the privacy policies and terms and conditions of every linked third-party website you visit.

CALIFORNIA ONLINE PRIVACY PROTECTION ACT COMPLIANCE

Because we value your privacy, we have taken the necessary precautions to comply with the California Online Privacy Protection Act. We will not distribute your personal information without your consent.

CHILDREN’S ONLINE PRIVACY PROTECT ACT COMPLIANCE

We comply with the requirements of COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act), and we do not collect any information from anyone under 13 years of age. Our website, products and services are all directed to people who are at least 13 years old.

ANALYTICS

We use Google Analytics to record information about the pages a user has seen, such as the URL of the page, time of day and the device used. The information we collect is anonymized and sent to Google Analytics for analysis. Google Analytics mainly uses first-party cookies to report on visitor interactions on this website. Users may disable cookies or delete any individual cookie. Learn more here. In addition, Google Analytics supports an optional browser add-on that – once installed and enabled – disables measurement by Google Analytics for any site a user visits. Note that this add-on only disables Google Analytics measurement. Google Analytics also collects Internet Protocol (IP) addresses to provide and protect the security of the service and to give website owners a sense of which country, state or city in the world their users come from (also known as “IP geolocation”). See this page for Google Analytics security and usage of data.

Whom we share your data with

In a nutshell: We will never sell, rent or lease your personal data to a third party. We think that is icky. We don’t want other sites using our personal data in that way, so we won’t do it to you. Pinky swear. But sometimes we use service providers and others who help with our business operations and assist in the delivery of our products and services (which, as of this writing, June 17, 2018, we don’t even have). This includes but is not limited to:
  • Application development, site hosting, maintenance, data analysis, infrastructure provision, IT services, customer service, email delivery services, payment processing, marketing, analytics and enforcement of our Terms of Use and other agreements.
  • Other users of the site to identify you to anyone to whom you send messages or make comments through the services.
  • People or entities with whom you consent to have your personal data shared.
  • Third parties in order to prevent damage to our property (tangible and intangible), for safety reasons or to collect amounts owed to us.
  • Merchants and payment processors.
  • Third parties as we believe necessary or appropriate, in any manner permitted under applicable law, including laws outside your country of residence to:
    • Comply with legal process.
    • Respond to requests from public and government authorities, including public and government authorities outside your country of residence.
    • Enforce our Terms of Service and other agreements.
    • Protect our operations.
    • Protect our rights, privacy, safety or property, and/or that of our affiliates, you, or others.
    • Allow us to pursue available remedies or limit the damages that we may sustain.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue. For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal or security purposes. To contact us, click here.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam-detection service. You can find the privacy policy of Antispam Bee (our current spam-detection service) by visiting GitHub.

HOW WE PROTECT YOUR DATA
